The Johnson C. Smith University sports medicine staff and facilities provide Golden Bull athletes with the best of care in both the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. When an athletic injury occurs, the goal is to provide the best medical care possible from the initial first-aid to follow-up to rehabilitation, and ultimately a return to participation. The athletic training facilities consist of two athletic training rooms on campus to meet the needs of all of JCSU's student-athletes. The main training room is located in the Irwin Belk Complex on the south side of campus adjacent to the gymnasium parking lot. There is also a satellite training room located in Brayboy Gymnasium.
Layla M. McCall, who is in her first year as the head athletic trainer at JCSU, leads a staff that includes assistant athletic trainer Tim Botic and a group of athletic training room student assistants. JCSU's medical group consists of team primary care physician, Dr. David Price, team orthopedic physician Dr. Michael Dockery, and team primary care fellow Eric T. Warren.
For general medical coverage, JCSU student-athletes have full access at Eastland Family Clinic, which is one of the leading healthcare providers on the east coast and OrthoCarolina, the largest orthopedic group in southeastern United States.
