JCSU Wins Two Events at Virginia Tech Challenge



Freshman Shermaine Williams won the 60m hurdles and now leads all sprint hurdlers in NCAA Division I and II rankings

Johnson C. Smith University won two events this past weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va. Freshman combo Shermaine Williams and Leford Green won the 60m hurdles and 400m respectively. Green also finished second in the 200m. Shermaine's time of 8.25 decimated the field and was a personal best. She now leads all freshman sprint hurdlers in NCAA Division I and II rankings.

Leford Green also got the top Division II time in the 400m running an impressive 47.01 to lead all participants. This dropped an amazing full second off his previous indoor personal bests of 48.17. This time now leads all Division II 400m runners. His 200m mark of 21.40 is now second best in Division II.

The men's 4x400m team of Leford Green, Demetrius Hawkins, Alberto DeCosta, John Rosemond narrowly missed qualification for the NCAA Championships turning in a time of 3:20.33 in that event. The required time for qualifying is 3:19.70. Other notable performances were Lakaevia Tyler's 8.19 in the women's 60m, Coleman McNeil and Kevin Augustus 12.82 and 11.31 respectively in the men's shot put and John Rosemond's 51.46 in the 400m.

Williams and Green will make their way to the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Mankato, Minnesota on March 13-15 before returning to Charlotte to prepare for the outdoor season. The entire team will open up the outdoor season at the Wake Forest Open March 21-22, 2008.
