Men's BasketballJCSU Completes Season Sweep of Saint Paul's, 81-74

Johnson C. Smith University (12-7, 6-5 CIAA) traveled north to emerged victorious over the host Saint Paul's College Tigers (5-10, 2-9 CIAA), 81-74. Senior Maurice Hooper (Reidsville, N.C.) poured in a game high 20 points, his 15th double-digit scoring outing of the season. Despite having eight lead changes in the first half, the Tigers took a commanding lead late in the half to send JCSU into the locker room down by eight (44-36). Like their female counterparts earlier, JCSU fell victim to one SPC player's long ball shooting surge. George Leseur connected on 4-of-4 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes of play. JCSU outscored the Tigers 45-30 in the second half led by Edmund Rainey's (Buffalo, N.Y.) perfect shooting from the floor. Rainey was 4-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Bulls shot a blistering 66.7% during the second stanza en route to the seven point victory. Hooper's 20 points were joined by Ryan Scott's (Reston, Va.) 15 as well as Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, N.C.) and Rainey's 14 each. Freshman Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, Va.) returned home for the first time since donning a Golden Bull uniform. He chipped in nine points while dishing out four assists. Leseur ended with 17 points while Bruce Royal and Maurice Reevey chipped in 16 and 10 each. Shahumadd Jones, who left the game prematurely with an apparent knee injury, had five points and three rebounds. Johnson C. Smith moves on to host divisional foe Livingstone College on Saturday, February 2, 2008. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium. |
