Final Stats

Johnson C. Smith University outscored Shaw University 46-36 in the second half leading them to an 81-67 win over the host Bears. David Sanders (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the way with 16 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

Like their female counterparts earlier, Shaw opened the game on a 13-4 run forcing head coach Steve Joyner to call two time outs. Though the Golden Bulls regained their composure and took the one point lead mid-way through the first half, the Bears would not go away easily. The lead went back and forth for the rest of the half, until JCSU took a five-point advantage going into the intermission.

Shaw tied the game early in the second stanza, but that would be as close as the Bears would get. JCSU shot a blistering 62.5% from the field in the second half to pull away from the pesky Bears, recording their 16th win of the season.

James Dillard, (Apex, N.C.) and Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, N.C.) joined Sanders in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively. Hollis added seven boards and two blocked shots.

JCSU improves to 16-9 overall, 10-7 in conference play and 5-2 in the division. Shaw falls to 4-21 overall, 1-16 in league play and 1-6 in the division.

Johnson C. Smith moves on to face Fayetteville State on Tuesday, Feb. 19th in an all-important divisional match-up. Right now, Fayetteville State has the lead in the western division race. JCSU is tied for second with Saint Augustine's College at 5-2 overall.
