Elizabeth City State Fights Off Late Surge by JCSU, 69-61

Elizabeth City State University fought off a late surge by Johnson C. Smith University 69-61 tonight at the RL Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Foul trouble plagued JCSU from the start. By the end of the first half, three of the five starters had two fouls while reserve Tavaris Little was called for four personals. Elizabeth City State held the lead the entire game swelling the lead to as many as 14 late in the second half.

The Vikings squandered the 14 point lead allowing Johnson C. Smith cut the lead to three on a long ball by Ryan Scott with just 34 seconds left in regulation.

Olajuwon Johnson scored 13 of his 21 total points in the second half leading the Vikings to victory. Anthony Hilliard recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds while Kenyon Alston fell just one rebound short of his own double-double with 14 points and nine boards.

James Dillard led the way with 15 points and six rebounds followed by Jerry Hollis with a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds.)

The loss drops JCSU to 2-2 overall, 0-1 CIAA while ECSU improves to 1-1 overall, 1-0 CIAA.

JCSU moves on to face non-conference opponent Mars Hill College (Catawba College Tournament) this Friday, November 30, 2007. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the campus of Catawba College.
