Men's BasketballJCSU Topples Shaw Bears, 86-53
Dec. 11, 2007
Johnson C. Smith hosted the Bears of Shaw University tonight in Brayboy Gymnasium and cruised to a 86-53 victory. Led by the efforts of Jerry Hollis (Charlotte, N.C.), who poured in 23 points, the Bulls earned their first conference victory of the season. JCSU took a 10 day break from hardwood action and upon their return tonight, shot 51% from the field while holding Shaw to just 36%. The first half was a see-saw between both squads. Neither team controlled more than a four point lead until late in the first half. The Bulls found some offense and swelled the lead to double digits going into the half (37-26). The second half was a different story as the Bulls outscored the Bears 49 to 27. JCSU pulled away in a hurry and never looked back. "They're finally listening," remarked an elated head coach Steve Joyner, Sr. "They are listening to the coaches and themselves. I am pleased we were able to spread the ball around as much as we did." Hollis was the first to hit double-digits for either team. However, he would not be alone in his efforts. Four other team members scored 10 or more points. Rookie Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, Va.) was on fire from beyond the arc connecting on 5-of-6 long balls leading to his 15 point outing. Senior Maurice Hooper had 12 points while dishing out 7 assists. John Kornegay led all Shaw players with 17 points. He had significant help from Damola Obadina and Brandon Greene who chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively. Elizabeth City State University is next on the schedule, this Saturday, December 15, 2007. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Brayboy Gymnasium. |
