FootballVirginia Union Downs JCSU 42-14 in Football Action

Johnson C. Smith University (1-3, 0-1 CIAA) and Virginia Union University (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) took part in the ninth annual Western Virginia Education Classic held in Salem. Virginia. Behind the astonishing running ability of Tarian Donaldson who had 21 carries for 204 yards, the Panthers defeated JCSU 42-14. He accounted for nearly half of the Panthers total offense output for the day. The first quarter was all Panthers as they scored 21 of their 42 total points in the first 15 minutes of play. JCSU started the game driving steadily down the field but was eventually held out of the end zone by the Panthers who boast the number one red zone defense. Lamar Little connected with Andre Winston for a 12-yard score mid-way through the first quarter. Carlton Richardson’s pass was intercepted by Enrique Cox in which he returned 16 yards for a touchdown. Little once again found a target in the end zone, this time it was Phillip “Jarad” Taylor for a 22-yard score. Junior transfer Kevin Hall scored both of JCSU’s touchdowns on one-yard runs. The Milton, Florida native had 17 carries for 71 yards. Defensively, freshman Darius Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) had 13 total tackles on the day (5 solo, 8 assisted) and one forced fumble. Johnson was named the defensive most valuable player. For the Panthers, Little completed 10-of-17 passes for 167 yards and five touchdowns. He was named the offensive MVP. JCSU moves on to face Saint Paul’s College on September 27, 2008. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Brunswick High School. Virginia Union will travel to Murfreesboro to take on Chowan University.
