Golden Bulls Score a Season High 51 Points

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – October 25, 2008 - Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson (Columbia, S.C.) threw for 327 yards and a career high five touchdowns in JCSU’s 51-36 Homecoming win over the visiting Hawks of Chowan University. JCSU improves to 3-6 overall, 2-4 CIAA while Chowan drops to 2-7 overall, 1-5 in conference play.

As was to be expected, today’s contest was a passing shootout between both teams. JCSU racked up on a season high 522 yards of total offense while Chowan had 408. Each quarterback passed for over 300 yards in the contest with Richardson tallying 327 and CJ Westler recording 308.

The game started with a fumble by both teams. On the Golden Bulls’ next possession, Kenny Strickland (San Jose, Calif.) capped off a 10 play, 65 yard drive with a 15-yard pass reception from Richardson. Julius Wright (Fort Worth, Texas) missed the PAT leaving the score at 6-0.

Richardson’s passing yardage exploded to start the second quarter completing five passes for 83 yards and the eventual score. He once again found Strickland with a 32-yard bomb to increase the score to 13-0. On the Hawks’ ensuing drive, Westler’s pass was intercepted by Lamarr Person (Atlanta, Ga.) and returned to the Chowan 23-yard line. Richardson found another receiver, this time his favorite target – Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, Fla.) for the score, swelling the lead to 20-0.

Similar to Richardson, Westler found James Fox on two consecutive drives to cut the lead to 20-14. Wright converted a 29-yard field goal to give JCSU the 23-14 advantage heading into halftime.

On JCSU’s next two possessions, Richardson found two different receivers, Markus Gray (Newberry, S.C.) for 38 yards and Rico Poole (Atlanta, Ga.) for 28 yards to expand the lead to 37-14. The touchdown was Poole’s first score as a Golden Bull.

Chowan would score three more times while JCSU crossed the goal line two more times before it was all said and done en route to the 51-36 final score.

Kevin Hall (Milton, Fla.) had 16 carries for 94 yards and touchdown while Franklin had 7 receptions for 115 yards and a score.

Defensively, no one recorded double-digits in tackles. Quinton Toomer (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way for the gold and blue recording eight total tackles (4 solo, 4 assisted) one fumble recovery and one pass break-up. His fellow Atlanta and Westlake high school comrade, Darius Johnson was not far behind with six total tackles (three solo, three assisted), half for a loss of a yard, one interception returned for six yards, and two pass break-ups.
