Final Stats

Johnson C. Smith University enjoyed the sweet thrills of winning their Homecoming in front of 10, 463 faithful fans. The Golden Bulls cruised to a 27-6 victory over Division I-AA opponent Savannah State University (1-6)improving their record to 7-2, 4-2 CIAA. This is JCSU's first win over Savannah State in the history of the school and their first Homecoming win since 2003.

After saying thank you and good-bye to 16 seniors, it was time to go to work. JCSU won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Junior cornerback Fred Hoskins calmly intercepted Garrett William's pass and took it 32 yards to the SSU three-yard line. Three plays later, freshman running back Jason Lovett carried the ball virtually untouched into the end zone for the first score of the game.

"This was a great win for the alumni of Johnson C. Smith University," remarked Daryl C. McNeill. "It was great to walk off the field and see the elation on the face of our president, Dr. Yancy. Our fans are so excited and we are thrilled at the success that we have had thus far. Now we are getting ready for our championship game in Durham next week."

Savannah State finally drew blood on a Donja' Goodson interception. Trenton Newton ran the ball back 45 yards the other way for a touchdown. On the ensuing kick-off, De'Audra Dix returned the kick 74-yards for a touchdown...his third kick-off return for a touchdown of the season.

In the fourth quarter, Lovett again powered the ball into the end zone putting the Bulls ahead 21-6. The gold and blue did not stop there as Goodson wanted a taste of the end zone. Goodson used the quarterback keeper to seal the deal 27-6 with one minute and 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

Omar Bizzell was the team's leading defender with 11 tackles (3 solo, 8 assisted), one tackle for a loss of a yard, one fumble recovery, and two quarterback hurries. Rookie Lorenzo Hall had his best game of the season as he registered 10 tackles, 1.5 for a loss of six yards, a fumble recovery, and half a sack for a loss of 4 yards.

Next week, JCSU will take on the undefeated Eagles of North Carolina Central University. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 pm in Durham, NC.
