FootballThree Golden Bulls Named CIAA Football Players of the Week

Three Johnson C. Smith football players have garnered CIAA Player of the Week Honors. Sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Franklin, senior quarterback Carlton Richardson, and freshman linebacker Quinton Toomer were all named CIAA Players of the Week at their respective positions.
Franklin was named CIAA Receiver of the Week for his amazing performance vs. Edward Waters. The Casselberry, Florida native had 10 catches for an astonishing 237 yards and three touchdowns in JCSU's thrilling come from behind 37-31 victory over Edward Waters in OT. Franklin broke his own Irwin Belk Complex record for most receiving yards in a game. He also crossed the 1,000 receiving yard threshold in his young career.
Richardson was named CIAA Offensive Back of the Week after orchestrating a second-half comeback of the ages. He led an offense that battled back from an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat Edward Waters College 37-31 in OT. Richardson broke his own Irwin Belk Complex record for most passing yards. The senior connected on 20-of-31 pass attempts for a career high 339 yards and two touchdowns. He also used his legs and carried the ball 12 times for 19 yards and two touchdowns.
Freshman linebacker Quinton Toomer was named CIAA Rookie of the Week. Toomer was a forced to be reckoned with in his first start as a Golden Bull. He led all defenders with nine total tackles, (4 solo and 5 assisted) in JCSU's 37-31 come from behind OT victory over Edward Waters. JCSU will take that momentum with them when they take on Virginia Union University this Saturday, September 20, 2008. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Stagg Stadium in Salem, Virginia as part of the annual Western Virginia Education Classic. |
