JCSU Opens Conference Action at Virginia Union



Freshman Quinton Toomer and the rest of the defense will have a task on their hands trying to contain the potent VUU offense

All-Time...This week’s game is the 35th meeting between Johnson C. Smith University and Virginia Union University. Virginia Union has won 21 of the last 24 contests dating back to the first contest in 1926. The series record is 26-8-0 in favor of the Panthers.

The Last Meeting…Johnson C. Smith University (2-4, 1-2CIAA) played host to the #24 Virginia Union University Panthers (6-0, 3-0CIAA) who came into the contest with an undefeated 5-0 record. VUU avenged last year’s five overtime loss to JCSU by a final score of 30-17. Despite JCSU holding Little to just 76 passing yards, the running duo of Donaldson and Smith combined for over 340 yards of rushing offense. Donaldson had 18 carries for 183 yards and two scores while Smith added 162 yards and a score.

 

Richardson completed 18 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 18 carries for 63 yards.

 

Scoring Streak...JCSU has scored in 37 consecutive games dating back to a 56-0 shutout by Wofford in Spartanburg, in 2004.

QUICK NOTES

•Last week, the Johnson C. Smith offense were magical turning in 441 yards of total offense, 320 of which came in just the second half.

 

• Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson completed 18 passes for 234 yards adn two touchdowns. He also had 18 carries for 63 yards.

 

A Look Ahead...Johnson C. Smith will continue their conference run travelling to another part of Virginia to take on Saint Paul’s College.

 

CIAA’s #1 vs. #1...Johnson C. Smith University has the number one offense in the red zone while Virginia Union has the number one defense while in the red zone. The Panthers also lead the conference in Pass Defense, Kick-Off Returns and Total Defense. The Panthers are 2nd in the conference in rushing offense and rushing defense.

 

A Big Target...One week after finishing with just eight catches, sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Franklin tallied personal highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (237) versus Edward Waters. Franlin currently leads the team and the conference with 21 receptions and averaging 123.0 yards per game.

 

ATL Boys…In last week’s thrilling win over Edward Waters, two defensive players made their presence felt immediately. Freshmen and Atlanta natives Quinton Toomer and Darius Johnson had nine and eight tackles respectively to lead the Bulls to victory. Johnson also recorded an interception in the victory.

 

Senior Quarterback Showdown...There’s no doubt that this week’s game will be a battle of the senior quarterbacks. VUU’s Lamar Little has 4,620 passing yards and 55 touchdowns in just 29 games. JCSU’s Carlton Richardson has 4,146 passing yards and 21 touchdowns in 32 games. Both QB’s are also known to use their legs in making big plays.

 

Laying Down the Law…Sophomore Lawyer Montgomery has made the most of his first career starts in the first two games of the 2008 season. The Buffalo, N.Y. native leads the Golden Bulls in tackles with 22 total tackles, one pass break-up and an interception.

 

Franklin Keeps on Catching...Jeremy Franklin enters the VUU game having caught at least one pass in 13 consecutive games, which happens to be every game he has played in his collegiate career. The redshirt sophomore has 1,106 career yards and 10 touchdowns in his young career.
