The Last Meeting…For several reasons Johnson C. Smith University came into their first conference game with winning on their mind. A win would keep them at first place in the CIAA's western division, give JCSU their first win over St. Augustine's since the Falcons reinstituted their program in 2003, and break JCSU's two game losing streak. Johnson C. Smith (2-2, 1-0CIAA) emerged victorious over St. Augustine's College (0-4, 0-1 CIAA) by a score of 33-30. Herbert Collins, III converted a 25-yard field with eight seconds left to propel JCSU to victory.

Scoring Streak...JCSU has scored in 40 consecutive games dating back to a 56-0 shutout by Wofford in Spartanburg, in 2004.

QUICK NOTES

•Johnson C. Smith (1-5) won the last meeting against Saint Augustine’s (2-4) in a nail biter contest in Raleigh. It took a last second field goal to propel JCSU to victory. Both teams are struggling this year, but SAC’s defense has always been stout. Today’s game pits the number one pass offense in the conference (JCSU) against the number three pass defense in the CIAA (SAC).

Two players to keep an eye on this weekend are defensive lineman Phillip Stevenson and Marcus Kennedy. Kennedy is on the NFL watch list. Each had 10 total tackles in the win against defending CIAA champion Shaw University. Kennedy added 3.5 tackles for a loss of 26 yards and 3 sacks for a loss of 25 yards.

·         Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson moved to third on the all-time passing list with his performance against Livingstone. Richardson now has 4,537 passing yards. He also moved to number two all-time in total offense with 4,961 yards (4,537 passing, 424 rushing).

A Look Ahead...Johnson C. Smith will return play the second of a two game home stand vs. the always defensively stout Saint Augustine’s College.

Franklin Named Receiver of the Week…JCSU sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Franklin was named CIAA Receiver of the Week for his performance against Livingstone College. The Casselberry, Fla. Native had 7 receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Falcons Feeling Good…After beginning the season with a huge win over nationally ranked Catawba College, SAC went on a four game losing skid. However, the Falcons defeated cross-town rival and defending CIAA Champion Shaw University 27-16 last week to snap the streak.

Defense They Are…Saint Augustine’s has been known for their stout defense and this year is no different. The Falcons are ranked third in pass offense holding opponents to just 155.5 passing yards per game. SAC also boasts the number one player in sacks (Phillip Stevenson) and in tackles for loss (Marcus Kennedy).

Strong Leg…Sophomore kicker/punter Julius Wright leads the conference in punting averaging just under 40 yards per punt.

Richardson Over 1,000 Passing Yards Again…Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson crossed the 1,000 passing yard last week vs. Livingstone. He now has 1,140 yards on the season.

Number One Pass Offense vs. Number Three Pass Defense…JCSU has the number one pass offense in the CIAA averaging 211 ypg, however the Falcons are holding opponents to just 155 yards per game.

Franklin Keeps on Catching...Jeremy Franklin enters the LC game having caught at least one pass in 16 consecutive games, which happens to be every game he has played in his collegiate career. The redshirt sophomore has 1,360 career yards and 12 touchdowns in his young career.

A Golden Bull Win Will...

Give JCSU their second win of the 2008 season

Give JCSU their first conference win

Snap JCSU’s three-game losing skid
