QUICK NOTES

•Johnson C. Smith (2-6) has never played Chowan University (2-6) in football before. Both teams are struggling this year, but the aerial attack is one area that provides some relief for both schools.

Three players to keep an eye on this weekend are quarterback CJ Westler, receiver Eddie Coard and defensive back D’Angelo Goffigan. Coard caught nine passes for 123 yards last week vs. Shaw. Goffigan leads the team in passes defended with 11 and is the teams return man averaging 20.6 yards per kickoff return.

·         Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson is number one on the JCSU all-time total offense list with 5,663 yards (4,933 passing, 730 rushing). He also moved to second on the school’s all-time passing list with his performance against Fayetteville. Richardson now has 4,933 passing yards. In terms of CIAA history, Richardson is now 7th all-time in total offense and 14th all-time in pass offense.

A Look Ahead...Johnson C. Smith will play its final game of the season against the Shaw Bears at 1 pm.

Morgan Named CIAA Player of the Week…JCSU sophomore linebacker Michael Morgan was named CIAA Linebacker of the Week after his performance against the red hot Fayetteville State Broncos. Morgan had a game and career high 11 total tackles (6 solo, 5 assisted), 4 tackles for a loss of 33 yards and three sacks on the day for a loss of 29 yards against the offensively red hot Broncos of Fayetteville State University.

Neck and Neck…Johnson C. Smith and Chowan are virtually neck and neck in every statistical category in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense, total defense, rushing offense, rushing defense, pass offense and red zone defense.

Pitch and Catch Please…The Hawks and Golden Bulls have the number three and number four passing offense in the conference with CJ Westler throwing for 1,669 yards and 14 touchdowns while Carlton Richardson has thrown for 1,480 yards and eight touchdowns. Their favorite targets are Eddie Coard and Jeremy Franklin who have caught three and six touchdowns respectively.

Turnovers a Must… The Golden Bulls defense has forced at least one turnover in six of the eight games played this year.

482 and Counting…Senior quarterback Carlton Richardson has 4,933 passing yards going into the game vs. Chowan. He now needs 482 passing yards to become the all-time passing leader in JCSU history. He now has 1,480 yards on the season.

Home Sweet Home…JCSU will play the last two games at home, sort of. Homecoming is always played at Memorial Stadium in downtown Charlotte. The final game of the 2008 season will take place at the Irwin Belk Complex, the first time this has taken place since 2003 (vs. N.C. Central, L 48-7).

Franklin Keeps on Catching...Jeremy Franklin enters the Chowan game having caught at least one pass in 18 consecutive games, which happens to be every game he has played in his collegiate career. The redshirt sophomore has 1,505 career yards and 12 touchdowns in his young career.

A Golden Bull Win Will...
