It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. Johnson C. Smith University advanced to the semi-finals in the 2008 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament with a 55-50 win over the sixth seeded Lady Tigers of Saint Paul's College. Senior Rochelle Bodie (Raleigh, N.C.) became the second all-time leading rebounder in school history, surpassing Cassandra Howell's 1,013 rebounds set in 1986. Bodie now has 1,016 boards in her four year career.SPC head coach Serena King-Coleman said it best when she mentioned free-throws controlled JCSU's destiny in this contest. The Lady Golden Bulls converted more free throws (25) than SPC attempted (20). Johnson C. Smith also controlled the scoring in the paint as they dominated the Lady Tigers 26-10 in the paint.Seventh-year head coach Vanessa Taylor guided her team to their 20th win of the season. This is just the second time that Taylor's squad has posted 20+ wins. The Lady Golden Bulls went 20-11 during the 2005-2006 campaign.Kyria Buford (Charlotte, N.C.), who started off rather slowly was named the game's most valuable player as she ended with 12 points. Ashley Chase (Baltimore, Md.) added nine points while fellow senior Shemika Jones (Largo, Md.) contributed eight. Jones is now just nine points away from 1,000 in her career.Saint Paul's (11-15) was led by Katrina Wright's 16 points and six rebounds. Wright was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Tatiana Ellis finished with 10 points and five rebounds. The Lady Golden Bulls know that in order for them to be successful in their next game, they simply can not have another outing like tonight. The ladies move on to face the #2 Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Friday, February 28, 2008. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Bobcats Arena.
