Women's BasketballJCSU Women Remain Undefeated in the CIAA with 51-45 Win over Virginia Union
Jan. 5, 2008
The Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University (8-3, 4-0 CIAA) narrowly defeated the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union (0-8, 0-3 CIAA), 51-45 on Saturday night. It wasn't pretty, but it's a win and JCSU remains undefeated (4-0) in conference play. Neither team had an outstanding offensive outing but JCSU out-muscled VUU 53-40 on the boards to take the victory. JCSU held the lead through much of the first half with the score being tied only twice. By the end of the first half, the Lady Golden Bulls had a one possession lead 22-20. The same would hold true for the second half of play as JCSU led by as much as nine points. The feisty Lady Panthers would not go away and pressured JCSU into unnecessary turnovers which the team turned into points. The gold and blue committed 25 turnovers which VUU converted into 24 points. Junior guard Janai Jackson (Bowie, Md.) and senior guard Ashley Chase (Baltimore, Md.) were the only JCSU players in double figures. Both ladies had 11 points on the evening. Rochelle Bodie (Raleigh, N.C.) had her second double-digit rebounding game with 11 boards. Virginia Union had just one player in double figures in Dashia Chandler who contributed 10 points. JCSU will travel to Wingate, N.C. to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate University on Monday, January 7, 2008. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Cuddy Arena. Note: A win against Wingate would give head coach Vanessa Taylor her 200th career win in 13 years of coaching. |
