Johnson C. Smith Announces a Pair of Women's Basketball Early Signees

Johnson C. Smith University head coach Vanessa Taylor has announced the addition of two talented players that will join the Golden Bulls in 2008-09. Terran Quattlebaum, a 5-5 guard from Mitchelleville, Md., and Joy Rutland, a 5-11 wing player from Wilmington, Del., have inked national letters of intent to enroll at JCSU.

"We are delighted to have young ladies such as Joy and Terran join our program," commented assistant coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. "Both of these young ladies come from outstanding schools with both great academic and basketball programs."

Quattlebaum, averaged more than 12 points, four assists and nearly four steals per game. She helped C.H. Flowers to a 18-4 record in 2006-07 and a second-place finish in the 4A rankings last year. She is a Top Ten county leader in three-point shots and is also a Top Ten Washington, D.C. Metro Area leader in three-pointers. She was also listed as one of the Maryland Players to Watch Class of 2008.

"The Maryland connection has been good for us and we are continuing with that pipeline," said Taylor of Terran. "She shoots the ball very well and her quickness will be an asset to our team speed."

Rutland is a member of the fierce St. Elizabeth High School team in Wilmington, Del. The squad finished with a 24-2 overall record in 2006-07. She was listed at #17 in the Delaware Girls Top 25 Basketball Players. The team were the state champions and was ranked at No. 16 nationally in the USA Today Poll. Rutland averaged 12.5 points per game and is better than an 86% free-throw shooter. She led the team in free throw percentage and three-point field goals. She pulled in a whopping 46 long balls last season.

"We are really excited about Joy's basketball resume," said Taylor. "She comes to us with a lot of high school accolades and we hope that she will be an impact player in our program on the collegiate level. She is an outstanding shooter and will definitely add to our offensive arsenal from the perimeter."

JCSU (4-1) defeated Claflin 58-40 on Sunday in its final game before final exams. The Golden Bulls will return to action on Dec. 9 when they take on Division I Winthrop University. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Winthrop Coliseum.
