SoftballJCSU Defeats Voorhees, 9-1 in 5 Innings
April 4, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite brisk temperatures and continously strengthening rain, the Johnson C. Smith University softball team improved to 12-7 overall with a 9-1 victory over the visiting Voorhees College. The Lady Golden Bulls did most of their damage in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs on just two hits. The team went on to score one run in the third and two more in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth inning and the score reading 8-1, sophomore Asha Trim (Vallejo, Calif.) had a striking base hit up the middle. She then stole second and third base and advanced home on a wild pitch to stop the game in the fifth inning via the eight-run mercy rule (9-1). Trim ended the day going 1-for-1, scoring two runs and driving in another. She also had six stolen bases on the day. Freshman Allycia Watanabe (Waipahu, Hawaii), who was just recently named CIAA Pitcher of the Week, faced 21 batters, striking out six and walking just two. She gave up just one run in five innings of work. The second game of the scheduled double-header did not take place as both JCSU and Voorhees officials agreed to postpone the contest. With the temperature quickly decreasing and the rain increasing, it was decided that it would be in the best interest of the student-athletes to not play the game. A make-up date has not yet been decided. JCSU moves on to face the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, April 5. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Biddleville Park in Charlotte. |
