SoftballJCSU Sweeps WSSU Softball to Remain Atop the Western Division
Apr. 13, 2006
WSSU pitcher Amber Shore hit Nicole Villarreal with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game that was tied 4-4 to force Nikia Beachem across the plate propelling JCSU to a 5-4 victory in a crucial western division match-up. The Lady Rams, leading by one run in the top of the eighth inning could not hold onto the lead as a pair of hit batsmen led to two runs and the win for the Golden Bulls in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rookie of the Year candidate Teresa Vorwerk pitched a complete game allowing only four runs and striking out three batters. Sophomore centerfielder Torri Flenor used her only hit of the day to drive in the first run of the game. Venessa Roy went one-for-two driving in two runs that put JCSU up by two in the bottom of the sixth inning. In game two, WSSU head coach Lataya Hilliard-Gray decided to give reserve pitcher Elyon Taylor the starting nod. Unfortunately for Taylor, Smith cracked out 11 hits scoring six runs in the first three innings en route to the 6-0 shutout. Though Amber Shore came in to relieve Taylor in the fourth inning, the damage was already done and Smith rejoiced in victory. Earning the win for JCSU was Teresa Vorwerk who moved to 18-7 overall. The second game shut-out was Vorwerk's second shut-out of her brief career. WSSU falls to 19-18 overall and 17-5 in the CIAA with the loss while Johnson C. Smith moves to 29-11 overall and improves to 17-3 in the CIAA with the wins. Next up will be the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University on Friday, April 14, 2006. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Durham, NC at Hillside High School.
