April 29, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith University assistant volleyball/softball coach Alexis M. Avery has been selected to participate in the 2008 NCAA Women Coaches Academy being held May 28 - June 1 in Denver, Colorado. The NCAA Women Coaches Academy provides skills training for coaches at all levels to assist them in being more efficient, productive, resourceful and successful. The academy is designed for women coaches who are ready and willing to increase their individual effectiveness by learning advanced skills and strategies that directly affect their personal and team success. The participants learn skills that are not sport specific, yet ones that are relevant and necessary for coaching responsibilities, beyond the X's and O's. Avery, who will begin her 3rd season as an assistant in the Lady Golden Bull program this coming fall, will be among 25 female coaches taking part in the annual event. The coaches will discuss philosophy and fundamentals, management skills, communication strategies and career development. In the end, the Women Coaches Academy has three objectives which consist of skills development, retention and mentoring, all for the advancement of the student athlete. To date there have been 11 highly successful sessions of the five-day academies, which are open to any coach from any sport, and any division. Avery received her bachelor's degree from Hampton University in sport management in 2005. While at Hampton, Avery was a four year starter on the Lady Pirates volleyball team. She was named defensive player of the year (2003-2005) and in her senior year, she was the team captain. She is currently completing requirements for a master's degree in sports management. |
