JCSU Volleyball Post 2-1 Record After Day One at CIAA Round-Up



Sophomore Ashley Young-Jones had 32 kills in three matches on day one of the CIAA Round-Up

The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team picked up two wins over Saint Paul's College and Virginia State to post a 2-1 record on day one at the annual CIAA Round-Up.

In match one, JCSU defeated Saint Paul's in straight sets 25-16, 25-22, 25-21. Ashley Young-Jones (Asheville, N.C.) led the offensive attack with 13 kills on 19 attacks. She also had two solo blocks.

Match two would see the ladies fall in defeat to the defending Eastern Division champion Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University (25-11, 24-13, 25-6). Young Jones had eight kills while Rashondae Henderson (Caruthersville, Mo.) had two kills. Henderson also chipped in one service ace, five digs and a block assist.

JCSU would bounce back in the third match of the day which was a barn burner against Virginia State. Both teams would exchange wins in sets with JCSU winning sets one, three and the all important five. Game scores were (25-15, 12-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-10). Young-Jones once again recorded double-digit kills with 11 on the day, five digs, and three block assists. Alexis Webb (Durham, N.C.) had 24 set assists in the thrilling victory.

The tournament hosted by Fayetteville State University, will continue today with JCSU playing Bowie State University at 8 a.m. followed by an afternoon match-up against Virginia Union at 4 p.m.
