Women's VolleyballFayetteville State Defeats JCSU 3-0 in Volleyball
Oct. 28, 2008 Johnson C. Smith University (8-15, 4-7CIAA) gave the defending CIAA champions Fayetteville State University (19-15, 13-1 CIAA) a run for their money in tonight's volleyball contest. However, the powerful Lady Broncos left Charlotte victorious by a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-3). After going up 4-1 in set one, JCSU allowed Fayetteville State to rally and win the first stanza 25-13. Set two would be similar with both teams exchanging the lead up until the very end. The Lady Broncos pulled away late to win set two 25-18. The final set would be a different story as the Lady Broncos opened up a 5-0 lead forcing JCSU head coach Marquisha Clayburn to call a timeout. The timeout didn't do much good as FSU's Shatia Gidrey rattled off another 13 straight points before Smith would score their first one. The set ended by a score of 25-3. Fayetteville State was led by Samantha Meeks and Chekimbrell Jefferson who combined for 24 kills (14 and 10 respectively). Achari Mainor was the leading setter with 34 assists. Ashley Young-Jones (Asheville, N.C.) led the JCSU offensive attack with four kills while Alexis Webb (Durham, N.C.) dished out six assists. Young-Jones also had six digs in a losing effort. JCSU will not have much time to recover as they will face Salem College, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 29. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Brayboy Gymnasium. |
